Why Ireland Deserves More Than Three Days

Most of my clients ask about Ireland the same way. "We're thinking Dublin, maybe the Cliffs of Moher, and we'll be there about three days." I love the enthusiasm. But three days gets you a very nice airport transfer and not much else.

Here's the thing about Ireland. It's small, but it isn't quick. The roads are narrow and winding, and the best parts sit at the end of them. Spend your trip in a car racing between sights and you'll see a lot of hedgerows.

Give it eight to ten days, with three bases

I build Ireland trips around staying put. Two nights in Dublin for the history and the food, then a few nights in the south and west. Cork, Kilkenny and Ennis all work. Each one gives you a different Ireland, and unpacking only three times means you actually settle in.

Stay somewhere with a story

This is where Ireland shines. A country house or small castle property, tucked into a few acres with a fire going and a proper breakfast, beats a big-city room every time. The staff know the area, they know the best table in the village, and they know which pub has music on a Tuesday. That's what I look for.

Let someone else drive

Driving on the left, on lanes barely wider than the car, is not a vacation. A private driver-guide changes the whole trip. You can look out the window, ask questions, stop when something catches your eye, and enjoy that second glass at dinner. They'll also take you to places no tour bus can reach.

Add the experiences that stay with you

A private tour of a working distillery (yes, I'll find you a whiskey tasting), a morning with a local food producer, a guided walk along the coast with someone who grew up there. These are the details that turn a nice trip into the one you talk about for years.

Leave room for family

I recently had clients spend part of their trip connecting with family in Ireland, and it was the highlight of their whole trip. Not the castle. Not the scenery. Sitting down with relatives they had only heard about. If you have Irish roots, tell me. We can build time into the itinerary for it, and that only works when the schedule isn't packed.

Go slow

If you've been saving up for Ireland, don't squeeze it in. It's a place that rewards time.

Life is short. Go while you can. If Ireland is on your list, let's talk about what a slower version could look like for you. Schedule a free consultation with me.
